Sometimes we fall into the temptation to wonder whether God has lent His ear to our prayers or not. We are reassured by the Lord that, “ Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him (Mat 8.6).” Thus prayer is given for our benefit, not for Him Who lacks nothing. Evagrius teaches the following about praying,
“For what greater thing is there than to converse intimately with God and to be preoccupied with His company?” Evagrius the Solitary, Chapters on Prayer, 34.
In perpetual prayer, we have received much even if we have not obtained our request. God Who is the consolation and joy of our hearts is offered to us freely in prayer through The Spirit. Thus we have received when we ask and obtained much through our perseverance.
